ESSAY ON FILM ‘THIS IS SPINAL TAP’ This is Spinal Tap is a satirical film that features a fictional band called the Spinal Tap. Many viewers of the movie did not recognize it as fiction, which implies that they viewed it as an accurate representation of the band. The film is, however, a fiction and only seeks to satirize the activities of many Rock ‘n Roll bands of the sixties. What becomes apparent is that the movie is more of a tragedy than a comedy primarily because it features numerous cases whereby the drummers meet their untimely deaths in weird or comic situations. The following paper will discuss this aspect of the movie and compare some of these deaths that occur in the film with those that happened in real life because there are many similarities in the timely deaths and ultimate fates of the characters in the movie and those of other real bands. The documentary shows the unfortunate history of the band with drummers. At different times in the history of the band, several of its drummers have passed untimely through mysterious accidents. One has died through spontaneous combustion, another has choked on the vomit of an unknown person, another has died in a gardening accident, and yet another has died through an explosion. One has just disappeared and another died from an attack from a python. It becomes apparent that many drummers have played with the band and met their unfortunate end while still serving as drummers for the band. There is an extensive list of drummers for the band who are all deceased. They include the following. Stumpy or John Pepys who died in a mysterious gardening accident that the police have indicated that it is best left unresolved. Stumpy Joe or Eric Child who choked on vomit whose origin remains unknown. Many reported that the vomit was not his because according to one observer it is impossible to dust vomit. Peter Bond or James Bond who died through spontaneous combustion while on stage during a performance in the Isle of Lucy Mick Shrimpton who died because he exploded on the stage. Mama or Joe Besser who just disappeared because he could not tolerate this ‘shit’ and just left taking with him the band’s equipment during a tour in Japan. The speculation is that he is either playing jazz somewhere or dead. Ric or Richard Shrimpton who is presumed dead and allegedly sold his machine for dialysis so that he could buy drugs Stumpy or Sammy Bateman who died as he attempted to jump over a tank filled with sharks during a freak show. He was on a tricycle. Skippy or Scott Scuffleton whose fate is unknown Poppa or Chris Cadeau who was eaten alive by the python he kept as pet called Cleopatra. What these cases of tragedy make evident is that the fate of drummers for the band is sealed; that they will all meet some untimely and horrific or weird demise. Perhaps the producers of the film attempted to use this recurring motif of death, particularly concerning drummers in a bid to use satire to show the audience the fates of many real-life drummers, which often end in tragic ways. Researchers have indicated that the drummer is the member of the band who receives the least attention and who is the most underrated especially by the audience. The drummer is also the least discussed individual in the jazz analytical and historical literature. In fact, when drummers do appear or feature in some of the most popular mainstream media they are usually ridiculed in one way or the other as highlighted in the film ‘This is Spinal Tap.’ The film puts significant emphasis on the comedic and tragic deaths of each one of the many successive drummers for the band. Some of the ways these drummers die are satirical and significantly uncommon as it has been shown in the above paragraphs. What becomes clear from the movie is that the drummers are largely dispensable and that they are easily replaced despite the tragic fates they face in the end. Their stories seem mythological in a way because their deaths are almost guaranteed and are all bizarre. Besides, the fates of the drummers can also be interpreted as useful representations of the hard rock and heavy metal musician and star. For example, one of the drummers of the band rocks so hard on stage such that he ends up catching fire and combusting. The members of the group indicate that there has never been a permanent drummer for the band because all of them have suffered similar or almost same deaths because of over-the-top behaviors or activities. Their deaths can, therefore, be said to be important in categorizing the epitome of the hard rock ‘n roll scene of the 1980s and the stars who were mostly over-the-top, outright bizarre, loud, ridiculous and in your face kind of individuals. Despite their weirdness, it was characteristics and situations like these that made the 1980s rock scene a powerful one all over the world because the destinies and antics of many musicians and drummers drew significant attention and controversy. As such, there are various ways in which one can compare and contrast the stars in the movie with the band members of real life band groups. For example, the bizarre gardening accident that involves John Pepys or Stumpy has been repeated in real life events. The accident in the film, which leads to the death of Pepys, one of the many drummers for the band who end up dead, occurs in the garden and the authorities direct that it be left unresolved because it is so bizarre to confound. In 1992, the odd and weird death became a reality when the drummer to the rock band Toto, Jeff Porcano met his untimely death through a gardening accident. The drummer had been ailing from heart disease and other issues that left it weak. His long-term abuse of drugs like cocaine left his heart too weak and he died in his Los Angeles garden after he inhaled some insecticide. Furthermore, the long list of drummers who played for the band Tap can be matched by some real life groups that have had very many drummers. One such example is the Lynyrd Skynyrd band, which has had an endless number of band members especially drummers. Besides, the scene involving the death of one of the drummers through choking has also been seen in real life. Eric Joe, also Stumpy choked on vomit and died, although it is not clear in the movie to whom the vomit belonged. In the notes of Tufnel, it is clear that it was impossible to tell where the vomit came from because it is not possible to dust vomit as it is the case with fingerprints. However, despite the mystery of the death, the scene places the character within a large number of many great rock musicians who also died because they choked on their vomits. Some examples of such individuals include John Bonham who played for the Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Bon Scott who was the original singer of the band AC/ DC. All of these rock artists met their early demise through choking on their vomit. Furthermore, it is not just rock ‘n roll musicians, and artists who died this way, Tommy Dorsey, a famous band leader also died this way early in the 1950s. Furthermore, it is not just the deaths of the drummers that are informed or are similar to many of the deaths that have happened in real life. Other scenes in the movie have also been significantly influenced by things that occurred in the past. Besides, the film has also shaped significant practices in the industry. For example, as the band continues its tour, their performances continue to become dodgy, and at some point, they even end up performing at an Air Force base, where their music equipment pick up the chatter in the air traffic control building. Among the real-life bands that influenced Spinal Tap is Uriah Heep, and it did a performance at an Air Force Base. However, it has never been clarified if they also experienced similar radio interference. It is thought that the producers of the film picked up this idea when the keyboard player for Uriah Heep came to play keys for the movie album. Besides, the film has since become a valuable handbook for many rockers with many of t hem identifying with the activities, events, and way of life depicted in the movie. Overall, the film plays a critical function of embodying the scene of the 1980s rock ‘n roll, while at the same time addressing some of the issues that affected the industry including mysterious and untimely deaths. The film uses satire to show how the hard life of these musicians and the unending parties and rocking of the time led to undesired outcomes, for example, death. This bible verse says that, in our life, we’ll experience a lot of wars, disasters, problems and struggles. Our life isn’t perfect, not all are happy and miserable. God doesn’t wants us feel down, depress or weak. God is just challenging us, that’s why, we are given such problems. Problems that we, ourselves, can solve. We are His sons and daughters, He doesn’t wants us to suffer. But, we are the one who’s giving the reason why we suffer. Just take a look on God’s sacrifices for our sins, it’s like the height of Goliath while our problem is like the height of David, but, He doesn’t give up. He overcome the world. If you eat a lot or lost your appetite, having sleepless nights or excessive sleep, choosing to be alone rather than having social interaction with others and thinking of suicide. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you are prone to depression (Serendipitee, Bawens, Jeff, 2014). If you experienced those symptoms of depression, then go to a doctor and ask for help. Doctors can also recognize if there are health problems or medical causes that can trigger depression like illnesses, genetic causes, and addiction to drugs or alcohols. Illnesses like anxiety disorder can cause you depression because it is a mental disorder and the feeling of worry and fear are constant. Genetics can also cause depression because if someone in your family that is your first degree relative who has depression and left untreated, it has a greater chance that you can suffer depression. It can also pass through your blood or genes. However, most of the people who have depression is not because of family history. Addiction to drugs can also cause depression because of its side effects. Taking drugs or even drinking alcohol won’t help you overcome depression but rather it will worsen it. Maybe when you’re taking or drinking alcohol you’ll forget your problems but af ter that, you’ll think of your problem again. You’re just wasting your time and even your money (Serendipitee, Bawens, Jeff, 2014). If you consulted your doctor and you have decided that you will take, or won’t take any prescription drugs, it is better to search also for a cause that makes you depress, so that you can be alert to prevent those events happen in your life. Here are some events that can worsen your depression: having a fail romantic relationship, trouble in one member of your family, failure on your courses, feeling unhappy and worthless on your job, feeling uncomfortable with your environment, and having financial difficulties. Having a conflict with your partner or with one member of your family can cause depression because you’re not okay. You’re throwing words that can hurt each other. You’re angry that’s why, negative thoughts lead you’re fight. You don’t think about the better way for you to be okay but rather, you think of thoughts that deepen your fight. Pride of each other overrules. Until it came to the point that you hurt each other physica lly and emotionally. After the fight, you’ll remember all the things that your partner or family member did and said, and you’ll feel so down, insulted, bad and you think of negative thoughts like he/she will break me up, we won’t see each other again and he/she might find other better than me. It is usually happening that after the fight, you don’t have communication, but not permanently, and that is added to cause you depression because you’re going to miss him/her and be worried. Failure on your courses can cause depression because the idea of failing is hard to accept. You’ll think that your parents will be angry at you and then you might start comparing yourself to others that pass the course. You’ll feel weak, sad, down and worthless. You might lose your interest in studying and start rebelling. It is also the same if you feel worthless on your job. Experiencing financial difficulties can cause depression because you’re h aving problems in terms of money. Financial problem is the major stressor in our life. And all of us believe that, money is so important in our lives. If you don’t have enough money, you can’t support your basic needs and you can also stop schooling. And it is literally a big impact in our lives. It can also make you stress because of the deadline payment of bills, if you fail on paying it, you’ll have no supply of electricity and water. Keeping yourself busy is also an effective way of overcoming depression so that, you’ll forget things that can make you depress. Find a new passion or hobby, so you can have a reason why you wake up each morning. Be active in organizations. Spend time with people who makes you happy. Be generous in helping others because it can increase your self-worth (Kloopers, n.d.). You also need to maintain healthy relationships among your friends and family because it is important. They will help you to cope up with your depression. They will make you feel their unconditional love and priceless support. They are always beside you no matter what happens, that’s why keep in touch with them. Spend time hanging out with them. Have some social interaction. Talk to your most trusted person and open to her your feelings. You can also engage in some social organization, so that you’ll meet new friends and to prevent the sense of isolation. If you know someone that is also suffering from depression, give them advice, help them to get rid of depression and encourage them to follow the steps you’re facing on then think positively (Smith, Saisan, Segal, 2014). Developing healthier habit Developing healthier habit is the last major step to overcome depression. You need to improve your sleeping habits because, it can make a big improvement on your mental health. Getting enough sleep is healthy for our body. Train yourself to start going to bed early and waking up at the same time every day and night. Avoid taking naps longer than an hour because, it can make you feel more tired and make you harder to fall asleep. Avoid also sleeping less than 8 hours because it will lose your energy and you can’t think normally. You’ll have problem in making decisions. Limit food or drinks that contains caffeine because, it will make you harder to fall asleep. Exercise can also help you to fall asleep faster if you finish it at a right time (Healthysleep, 2007). You also need to have regular exercise daily because, it will increase your energy level and decrease the feeling of fatigue. Have a 30 minutes exercise every day and it can have a positive effect on your mood. It doesn’t mean that if you exercise you need to go to a gym a find an instructor. Be practical, just by having a walk and jog every morning is an exercise already. Exercise can also be a hobby or it can be a reason why you are busy. You’ll not just escape from depression but, you can also have a beautiful body figure and be stronger physically (Borchard, 2009). You also need to improve your diet because, it will help you feel less depressed and actively perform your tasks. What you eat has an impact on the way you feel. Don’t skip meals, so that you won’t easily get irritable. If you’re hungry, you’re tired on doing tasks and you’re having a bad mood most of the time. While if you’re fully loaded, you’ll have energy in performing tasks and don’t have a reason to be devastated. Add more fruits and vegetables into your diet, so that it can boost your mood and because it is nutritious. Eat three healthy and balanced meals a day (WebMD, 2005). Challenge negative thinking. If people are negative thinker, they see the world in a negative way. You can’t think right and ignore all the positive things and focus on the negative ones. And when negative people fail, they blame, down themselves and think that it will hold forever. Thinking negative won’t help you, but rather, it can add to your depression. It will be harder for you to recover from depression if you let your negative thoughts surrounds your life. Just think positive and don’t believe to your negative thoughts. Prohibition did not happen instantly, it settled on the country gradually, community by community, town by town, and eventually state by state for almost a century. The onset of National Prohibition in 1920 was merely the final blow. The first of the laws, such as the one in Virginia in 1619, through New Hampshire's law of 1719 were against drunkenness, not against drinking. The first law that limited liquor sales was implement ed because of the religious beliefs of citizens. This particular law was passed in New York in 1697; it ordered that all public drinking establishments be closed on Sunday because, on the Lord's day, people should be worshiping the Bible not the bottle. In 1735, the religious had a prohibition law enacted for the entire state of Georgia. The law was a complete failure and was abandoned in 1742. For the most part, however, during the 1700s and early 1800s, those opposing liquor on religious grounds used sermons and persuasion rather than politics and laws to make their point. These persuasive efforts were known as the Temperance Movement, and its goal was to get everyone to voluntarily temper use of spirits. Maine went completely dry in 1851 and, by 1855, so had New Hampshire, Vermont, Delaware, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York Alabama passed a Prohibition law in 1907 which became effective on January 1, 1909. Also, from an economic standpoint Prohibition was very expensive. To be able to figure out the exact financial cost to America during this thirteen year period would be almost impossible. The costs to the law enforcement offices, the courts, the operation of the jails and many other factors has been estimated at over a billion dollars. (Fisher 102) Prohibition also had a few good effects on America. Women took an important though small step toward personal freedom, and for a while lawmakers were slightly less likely to prohibit things (Rose 131). Though the effects of this time period were mostly negative Prohibition’s effects on America are still seen today.
